What is an eye exam?

What happens during an eye exam?

At the beginning of an eye exam, Dr. Bhatt reviews your vision health history and asks you a series of questions, including if you smoke, what prescription medication you take, and if you have a family history of any eye-related issues like glaucoma or cataracts. 

Once he assesses your vision, Dr. Bhatt:

• Examines your pupils and retina
• Performs a slit-lamp test to assess your eyelid and cornea
• Orders tonometry to test for glaucoma
• Conducts a color blindness test

Lastly, Dr. Bhatt dilates your eyes with special eye drops. The eye drops make your pupils larger, allowing him to observe the back of your eye.

What if my eye exam uncovers vision problems?

If Dr. Bhatt detects any vision problems during your eye exam, he develops a custom treatment plan.

 If you’re farsighted or nearsighted, Dr. Bhatt may recommend that you see an optometrist for a prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. If you have an eye disease, like glaucoma or macular degeneration, Dr. Bhatt might recommend prescription medication or surgical intervention.

How often should I have an eye exam?

The frequency at which you should schedule an eye exam depends on your age and vision. If you don’t have any vision problems, Dr. Bhatt recommends scheduling an exam once every five years.

Beginning at age 40, schedule an exam every other year. If you’re aged 65 or older, Dr. Bhatt recommends getting an eye exam every year.
